With reference to Mr Secretary blaktone's Despatch. N. 60 of July 32, I have the honor to explain. the apparent anomaly in mine, N. 45 of April 24, respecting Lecutenant. Pedder's functions..
The folenial. Secretary's Letter of March-
of
25th, 1846, was addressed to Mr Pedder in
consequence of that Officer. being at the time- unprovided with an interpreter, to enable him to conduct the duties of Marine Magistrate in Chinese
Cases- For this particular reason, it was
directed that the Marine cases should be
(temporarily at least) taken up by the Police
Magistrate.
